France joins CLARIN ERIC
We are pleased to announce that as of 1 February 2017, France officially has joined CLARIN
as an Observer. The Observer status allows a country that is not yet ready to apply for full membership to start contributing to CLARIN projects, events and other activities.
As an active country in the field of digital humanities and linguistics, France has closely monitored the structuring of CLARIN as a European research infrastructure.

CMU-TalkBank to Sign Third Party Agreement with CLARIN
We are happy to announce that CMU-TalkBank has officially joined CLARIN ERIC as a Third Party. CMU-Talkbank is based in Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, USA. CMU-TalkBank (http://talkbank.org) attained CLARIN B-Centre status in 2015 and has recently become a CLARIN K-centre as well, and now there is the committment for an association at the University level. This commitment is supported by the University Libraries, the Language Technology Institute, and the Department of Psychology. CMU-TalkBank eventually hopes to extend their association to include other institutions in the United States.

Spring Starts with a New Partnership
A Memorandum of Understanding between LIBER, the Association of European Research Libraries, and CLARIN ERIC has been signed on 22 March 2017 in Lausanne.
LIBER represents over 400 research and special libraries across Europe, their universities and researchers. The Foundation promotes in particular:
• efficient information services,
• access to research information,
• innovation in end-user services supporting teaching, learning and research,
• preservation of cultural heritage, and
• efficient and effective management in research libraries.
LIBER and CLARIN ERIC share objectives in promoting the use of digital collections and digital techniques, in particular in language-related research in the social sciences and humanities. Both organisations recognize the need to enhance competencies, knowledge exchange and skills for the use and management of language research data, ICT methods and technologies, including scientific information infrastructures such as CLARIN.

Reminder: Call for CLARIN workshop proposals 2017 still open
This is a reminder that the Call for CLARIN workshop proposals (2 types) - 2017 is still open. Workshop proposals can be submitted until 1 July 2017.
An overall budget of €90,000 is available for workshops to be organized by representatives of the national consortia. Funding for two types of workshops can be requested:

Workshop type I: addressing a topic that is in line with one or more of the strategic priorities of CLARIN.
-
Workshop type II: meant to prepare a work plan for a development project of up to threeperson months, contributing to one or more of the strategic priorities of CLARIN.
Applications can be submitted on behalf of a team of collaborating representatives from at least three countries that are members or observers of CLARIN (see overview of consortia). CLARIN encourages proponents to consider conjoining the proposed workshop with other events to use synergies, but this is not a requirement.

Beta Testing: VLO 4.1
A beta version of the upcoming new release of the Virtual Language Observatory resource discovery service is now available at http://beta-vlo.clarin.eu, for everyone interested to have a look, try out some of the new features and check that there aren't any major issues. The new release will be
version 4.1. Compared to the version of VLO currently in production, there are several new features that will improve the experience of using the VLO. For instance, it is now possible to select multiple values within a facet, collection names are shown directly below the titles in the search results, and the representation of resources has been tweaked. Any issues, remarks or other feedback can be reported to the development team via vlo [at] clarin.eu (vlo[at]clarin[dot]eu).
If you are interested in doing software testing for CLARIN applications and services and would like to be notified if new software is available for testing, you can join the testers pool. To do so, please fill in the registration form.

DayofDH 2017

DayofDH is an annual event which aims to bring together digital humanists from around the world to document what they do on one day. It is a great opportunity to meet other participants from around the world and share projects and ideas. DayofDH 2017 will be celebrated on 20 April 2017.
This year the event will be organized by the CenterNet, the International Network of Digital Humanities Centers, with the hosting and technical support of the LINHD: Laboratory of Innovation of Digital Humanities of the UNED (Digital Innovation Lab @ UNED), headed by Elena González-Blanco (UNED) and the collaboration of Humanidades Digitales CAICYT, headed by Gimena del Rio Riande (Conicet, Argentina).

Deadline extension CfP - NoDaLiDa 2017 - Workshop on Processing Historical Language
22 May 2017, Gothenburg, Sweden
In conjunction with NoDaLiDa 2017 in Gothenburg, Språkbanken at the University of Gothenburg is organizing a half-day workshop on Processing Historical Language in the afternoon of 22 May. Språkbanken is a key member of the Swedish CLARIN network, known as SWE-CLARIN.
The workshop aims to bring together researchers working on processing historical materials, with a particular focus on work that investigates the combination of data-driven and knowledge-driven modelling.
The workshop is open for researchers working on historical material from any language area, and for researchers in computational linguistics as well as computational philology. The primary focus lies on older historical text, for instance from times corresponding to the European medieval period or older, however, contributions on newer historical material, are welcome too.
Authors are invited to submit 4-page papers on this topic. The extended paper submission deadline is 26 March 2017.

Second Conference of Research Software Engineers
7-8 September 2017, Manchester, United Kingdom
Following the success of the First Conference of Research Software Engineers, the Second Conference will be held at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester on the 7th-8th September 2017.
RSE2017 is not a standard academic conference. Researchers are welcome, but RSE2017 aims above all to build a community of people developing and working with research software. Engineers who may not typically attend conferences are welcome. Discussion workshops around the themes of reproducible research, software development culture and practices, and research software engineering as a career are welcome.
A lively, international mix of over 200 attendees is expected, and the calls for talks, posters, workshops and tutorials are now open.
The deadline is Friday 28th April, with an early deadline of Friday April 7th for those who want to apply for £250 travel bursaries.

LREC is the major event on Language Resources and Evaluation for Human Language Technologies. LREC aims to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art, explore new R&D directions and emerging trends, exchange information regarding LRs and their applications, evaluation methodologies and tools, communicate on-going and planned activities, identify industrial uses and needs, and address requirements from e-science and e-society, with respect to scientific, technology, policy and organisational issues.
In 2018 LREC will go East in order to support a stronger interaction with the Asian community, and to help promote Asian Language Resources and Language Technologies.
LREC provides a unique forum for researchers, industrial partners and funding agencies from a wide spectrum of related disciplines to discuss issues and opportunities, find new synergies and promote initiatives for international cooperation, in support of investigations in language sciences, progress in language technologies (LT) and development of corresponding products, services and applications, and standards.

The Center for Mind-Brain Sciences (CIMeC) at the University of Trento, Italy, invites expressions of interest from highly motivated scholars in view of the opening of a principal investigator position at the level of Tenure Track Assistant Professor (and, if after 3 years the tenure track AP will have obtained the Italian Scientific Habilitation for Associate Professor, she/he will be evaluated to obtain the Associate Professor Position at CIMeC).
